A Tour Of Canada: A Great Golden Wedding Anniversary Gift
One of my nieces moved to Canada many years ago and my sister and her husband have recently visited her. The holiday was one of their golden wedding anniversary gifts from their children, and Sue and David spent a great month with their eldest daughter.
They toured Canada and spent some time in Alberta and the independence movement was discussed in the media while they were there.
I am in the UK, a long way from Canada, although that country does of course have close ties with us. So it came as some surprise to hear that various parts of Canada would like independence. Quebec, of course, has long wished to cut the ties with the rest of Canada, but in view of the different languages spoken there is some logic to that. However, to learn that Alberta wishes to stand alone prompts me to ask could they survive as a nation? Talk of a seperate defence force is laughable: who seriously would want to invade, and if another country did how could Alberta successfully defend itself?
Maybe a looser confederation of separate states within Canada could be modelled on the European Union? But that is hardly a successful body that anyone would want to copy.
